  4.     The title on the door says Associate General Counsel. But
  5. it is no secret around TIME that lawyer Bob Marshall is
  6. actually a major league baseball player manque. Instead of his
  7. business card, he is likely to hand you his baseball card, a
  8. souvenir of the "fantasy" session he attended at the
  9. Philadelphia Phillies training camp in 1986. "Have one," he
  10. told a visitor. "Have two."

  12.     Perhaps it is his shortstop's ability to anticipate that
  13. makes Marshall so well suited to his real job. He reads TIME
  14. articles (including this one) before publication to help keep
  15. anything defamatory from slipping through. Still, says
  16. Marshall, "I get more pleasure from helping TIME say something
  17. than from keeping TIME from saying it." Marshall is known for
  18. his "elegant fixes," the subtle changes of phrase that defuse
  19. potential libel problems without reducing hard facts to mush.
  20. His batting average on keeping TIME out of trouble is
  21. substantially higher than the impressive .689 he hit for the
  22. magazine's softball team last year.

  24.     Marshall's empathy for the journalists he advises comes
  25. naturally: as a boy, he wrote for The Log of the West Wind, the
  26. paper at his summer camp, and he was later sports editor for
  27. the Harvard Crimson. After graduating with a degree in American
  28. history, he joined the Peace Corps and taught English in Libya
  29. and Tunisia. Columbia Law School followed, and in 1976 Marshall
  30. joined TIME.

  32.     Between briefs, Marshall has managed to write some less
  33. academic material. His Diary of a Yankee-Hater, which is just
  34. that, was published in 1981. He is now editing a book on
  35. Lawrence Park, the turn-of-the-century artists' colony in
  36. Bronxville, N.Y., where he grew up and lives today. Our
  37. renaissance lawyer is also an avid bird watcher, gardener, art
  38. buff and rock-'n'-roll aficionado: his raunchy rendition of
  39. Blue Christmas, Elvis-style, is the highlight of  the law
  40. department's annual lunch.

  42.     Staffers consider Marshall an honorary journalist and value
  43. his extralegal advice; he even catches occasional grammatical
  44. errors. Senior editor Jose M. Ferrer III recalls asking
  45. Marshall to review an early draft of a story. "He said there
  46. was no problem legally, but that it was the dumbest thing he'd
  47. ever read in TIME," says Ferrer. The story was killed. Some
  48. fielding.
